Generic Retrovir Capsules A Prescribed Drug to Treat HIV-1 Infection Part 1

Drug Description

Generic Retrovir is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. It is an antiviral. Its work is to block the reproduction of the HIV virus. The generic name of the drug is Zidovudine. This drug is used together with other anti Generic Retroviral agents for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. It is also used to prevent transmission of HIV virus from women to the fetus during pregnancy.

Contraindication

Generic Generic Retrovir should not be used in patients with allergic to any ingredient in it. This medication is also contraindicated in some patients having medical conditions such as high lactic acid levels in the blood, enlarged liver, or abnormal liver function tests. The use of this drug should be avoided in patients taking doxorubicin, stavudine, ribavirin, or any drug that carries zidovudine.

Dosage and Administration

Actually this dose is given under strict medical supervision. The dose will differ from patient to patient. Hence it is advised to consult the doctor for appropriate dose.

The suggested oral dose to treat HIV-1 Infection is 600 mg/day given in divided doses together with other antiRetroviral agents.

To treat pediatric patients from 4 weeks to <18 years of age with this disease, the doctor should give special attention to dispensing information, and dosing instructions.

The appropriate dose of the drug will vary for each child depending on body weight (kg).

If a child is unable to swallow capsules or tablets, the Retrovir syrup formulation can be used. The dose will differ forprevention of Maternal-Fetal HIV-1 Transmission havingsevere Anemia and/or Neutropenia, renal impairment and hepatic impairment.
